The samurai, or bushi, were the members of the military class, the Japanese warriors.
Samurai employed a wide range of weapons, but their most famous weapon, and the symbol that had struck fear into the hearts of their enemies for over 900 years, was the sword.
Samurai were supposed to lead their lives according to the ethic code of Bushido,
the way of the warrior. Bushido stressed concepts such as loyalty to one's master,
self-discipline, and respectful ethical behavior.
The samurai were often called upon to help their allies,
and were willing to go to any and all lengths to serve their shogun masters.
In the summer of 1296, a small group of samurai had crossed the steppes of Asia in pursuit of a Mongolian horde responsible for the death of their Shogun master.
As they tracked their master's killers, they happened to come across a Christian crusading army returning home to France and England after suffering defeat and exile from Jerusalem.
King Philip had found the Samurai's code of ethics so compelling, he retained their services in hopes of retraining his own army's thinking.
The samurai had found a new master in King Philip, and soon began teaching the way of the sword to the king's finest knights, who over the years had been given the name "Samurai Knights."
