There's a lot of reasons for that.
Dr. Larry Bush says while data has already shown that Omicron is a milder variant than previous variants,
now we know the case fatality rate is lower as well.
That means the number of people infected with COVID who end up dying is going down.
It used to be 1.6%.
The amount of deaths we're seeing are so low that the case fatality per case diagnosed is dropping
and is probably approaching 1% now, or below 1%.
He also says this can be attributed to more people than ever being vaccinated and the increased availability of testing.
As chairman of infection control at Wellington Regional Medical Center, he's seeing these positive trends at his hospital too.
What we're seeing in the hospital as far as hospitalizations and people dying is nowhere what we were seeing before.
And the positivity rate in the hospital is dropping.
However, Dr. Bush says everyone must stay vigilant and get vaccinated and boosted as soon as possible.
The next variant will come along just like there are different flus every year.
So if that's the case, we're going to have to continue to get new vaccines or boosters.
And as this wanes, as I expect it to in the next 10 to 15 days,
people may say there's no reason for you to get a booster.
