This calf was sadly discovered dead on the surface after an alert had said that it was in distress.

Nearby, its mother was agitated, but initially appeared to be normal.

Witnesses then described watching her movements become strange before she stopped moving and sunk below the surface.

On July 25th, a Japanese ship struck a reef off Mauritius and leaked over 1,000 tons of oil into the ocean.

Preliminary autopsy results on two of the dolphins that washed ashore this week showed no trace of hydrocarbons in their bodies.

However, more results are still pending.

On Thursday, Greenpeace called on the government of Mauritius to launch an urgent investigation to determine the cause of the deaths and any ties.

The government is also calling for a national emergency to be put in place.
