Video Transcription
The films in these series of videotapes constitute some
of the most valuable sexual artifacts that we have
of our contemporary culture.
They cover a period of time between the 1930s
and the late 1950s.
They were made black and white
and were often called smokers referring
to the smoke-filled rooms in which they were once shown.
Music of the time has been added to add another dimension.
The acts in the film remain the same then as they do now.
However, the films are reflective of the culture
out of which they arose.
The settings are different.
The clothing is different.
The attitudes that people have toward one another is
somewhat different, but the situations are the same today
as they were then.
In the 1930s, our nation was in the period of a depression.
Out of this depression, these films reflected an attempt
to find humor and joy.
In the 1950s, in the period of McCarthy and Kieffhoffer,
there was an attempt to find an enjoyment of being sexual.
There was also a new assertiveness of women
as it began to show in these films.
These films are extremely valuable
for understanding our culture.
They are extremely valuable for understanding ourselves
